This is the state of our country.
I just woke up to hear that the latest winner of American Idol garnered more votes than any presidential candidate *in history*. Really, seriously? This fact frightens, disturbs, and saddens me. I'm honestly at a loss for words.

i heard that as well...but i'm not sure i'm buying it, at least as it's currently being sold.
For one thing, not everyone can vote in a real election but anyone (regardless of age) with a phone can vote for their favorite idol.
Second, (theoretically) you can only vote for the president once...however, you can vote for your idol as many times as you can get through on the line.
Third, there are programs like the one available at dialidol.com that let your computer take over and dial as many times as possible within the voting window.
so technically speaking, maybe hicks got more votes than any president has ever received. but the question remains...did more people actually vote for him than any past president? or did fewer people vote and just vote more often?
either way, you're still right, it's sad that we're even having to have this discussion.
Thanks, Birdie. These are definitely points that I considered, but I'm still disturbed they would even tout it that way. It's nothing to be proud of! And whose pockets are getting lined b/c don't those texts cost money?
This has just been building up for me. The thing is, this Idol contest has been at the top of the news for weeks now. Is there nothing more important going on? C'mon.
