Things we learned during our weekend in Portland:
Portland is a small city with a minimal skyline and trees everywhere.
Oregon has no sales tax, a fact we enjoyed taking advantage of.
Pumping your own gas is illegal in Oregon.
The International Rose Test Garden is lousy with roses.
Buying strawberries at a roadside stand is a good thing in Oregon.
Powell's isn't so much a "city" of books, but rather a "world" of books.
The Oregon coast is worth the 1.5 hour drive.
Portland has perfect gelato, too!
People in Portland are generally smartasses.
Those same people are generally covered in tattoos.
We like people in Portland.

What incredible rose pictures! Loved how green the Japanese garden was, too. Got a kick out of not being allowed to pump your gas. You're not supposed to in Jersey either, and that always bugs me - i like being responsible for my gas at the pump!
Man, I was all about that. There's nothing worse than:
b)Pumping gas when it's raining
c)Pumping gas when it's cold
=)
xoxo, h.
nice pics as usual h!
other states with no sales tax:
New Hampshire
Montana
Alaska
Delaware
Ah the things you learn while writing software for a sales & use tax company.
Hmm, I knew about Montana, but not the others. We have no state income tax here in WA... what do you know about that, Birdie? =)
oh yes, I like the no sales tax in New Hampshire. I've been known to do a bit of pointless shopping there for that reason alone (last Thanksgiving I took advantage of this little perk), as does the entire state of Massachusetts.
Portland sounds like it rocks.
Ditto on the beautiful roses pictures. Also, love the skirt--you always have fun summer skirts!
So is a return trip still on the books for my visit?
Definitely Beth! We looooved Portland. Oblation, however, was cool, but not as cool as I expected. =)
