World Cup Fever.

Heather, Nathan, Auri, and I made it out this evening to our favorite British pub, the George and Dragon, for England's second World Cup match. They won the game 2-0, but you'd never know it from the headlines on The Guardian: "Witless England Dig Their Way Out". Hilarious!

Some highlights:
"At the close England's players departed to cheers, but the scorn at the interval is the sound they should replay in their minds."

In reference to injured star striker Wayne Rooney: "Talisman he may be, but after the metatarsal injury that has educated the nation in one tiny area of orthopaedics, Rooney is also a forward dulled by seven weeks on the sidelines." This line is just too funny--one can only imagine the diagrams of gnarly feet that the country had pounded into their heads over the past several weeks.

And, on embattled forward Peter Crouch: "Crouch had been even more extravagant when England were not riddled with fear."

Gotta love those descriptions.

The Guardian did give a smartassed nod to one of their stars, Michael Owen, in a related article with the immortal headline: "Crouching lion, hidden Owen".

Don't miss the next match on Tues, June 20...

England did look awful considering that T&T was supposed to be a pushover. T&T had no luck. They were an amazing summersault kick and one offsides away from a 2-2 tie. If England doesn't improve, teams that are able to take care of business (Argentina) will beat them.

Don't we know it? At a minimum, it'll eventually come down to a match against Brazil and that's when it'll all come falling down... sigh.

and now i'm trying to control my laughter.

Oh well, my football doesn't start until September anyway...but i was going to make an effort to watch and learn this year. unfortunately, being on the east coast makes it hard to catch any of the games, er matches, without missing work.

I'm just hoping we can give Italy a run for their money tomorrow.

We thought someone might get killed in the stands after that offsides incident. So while i just don't get soccer (SORRY GUYS!), i did have to appreciate the many views of David Beckham. He has such a hot haircut!
